Read — 5 min · morning and night

The heart has been beating since before you opened your eyes. Four chambers opening and closing in the dark. No decision required. No willpower. No discipline. Just the steady pulse that kept you alive while you slept. Seventy times a minute. Four thousand times an hour. A hundred thousand times since yesterday morning. And you did not have to remember to make it happen. You did not have to stay awake to keep it going. The muscle worked. The valves opened. The blood moved. And you were carried through the night by a system that does not need your attention to function.

The lungs filled. Sixteen times a minute while you were unconscious. The diaphragm pulled down. The ribs expanded. Air came in. Oxygen crossed into blood. Carbon dioxide crossed out. Air left. The cycle repeated. Thousands of times. And you did not supervise any of it. You did not check if it was working. You just woke up and the breathing was already happening. Already delivering what the blood needed. Already clearing what the blood did not need. The exchange continuing without pause. Without error. Without you.

The eyes opened. Two small spheres of liquid and nerve that have been translating light into meaning since you were born. The lids lifted. The pupils adjusted to the dim room. The lens focused. The retina fired. And before you had a thought about what you were seeing, you were already seeing it. The ceiling. The window. The grey light of early morning. All of it arriving in your brain as information you did not have to decode. You just looked and you knew where you were. What room. What hour. What world. The eyes did this. Not you. You just received what they gave you.

The inner ear held you upright before you stood. Three small loops of fluid and membrane that know which way is down. That know when you are tilting. That send signals to muscles you cannot name so your body corrects itself before you fall. You do not feel this happening. You do not think: adjust now. You just sit up and your head stays level. You stand and your balance holds. You walk and you do not tip over. Because the inner ear is working. Because the system that keeps you vertical is running in the background. Because your body knows how to stand even when your mind is somewhere else.

The spine carried the weight. Thirty-three bones stacked in a curve that has been holding you up since you learned to walk. Discs between them absorbing shock. Ligaments holding them together. Muscles pulling them into alignment. And you did not have to build this structure. You did not have to maintain it consciously. You just stood. You sat. You moved. And the spine did what spines do. It bore the load. It flexed when you bent. It straightened when you stood. It held the skull. It protected the cord. It kept you solid while everything else moved.

The legs walked you to the park. Two long levers of bone and muscle that have carried you for decades without asking for much in return. The hip flexed. The knee bent. The ankle rolled. The foot pushed off. The other leg swung forward. The cycle repeated. Step after step. And you did not have to think about any of it. You just decided to walk and the legs did the walking. They knew how. They have always known how. The system is built in. The pattern is stored. You just give the direction and the body follows.

The feet took the weight with every step. Fifty-two bones between them. A hundred muscles. A thousand nerve endings. All of it working together to absorb the impact. To read the ground. To adjust for the unevenness. To keep you stable on a surface that is never perfectly flat. And you did not praise your feet. You did not thank them. You just walked. And they did what they were built to do. They held you. They carried you. They made the ground safe.

The skin kept the world out and the body in. Two square metres of barrier stretched over everything. Waterproof. Self-repairing. Covered in sensors that tell you when something is too hot or too sharp or too close. And it did this all night. While you were unconscious. While you were not protecting yourself. The skin was protecting you. Keeping the bacteria out. Keeping the moisture in. Regulating the temperature. Sending signals when something needed your attention. And you woke up intact because the skin did its work without being told.

The liver filtered the blood while you were dreaming. A dark red organ you have never seen. Tucked under the ribs. Processing toxins. Storing energy. Making proteins. Breaking down what the body does not need. Building up what the body does. And you did not schedule this. You did not remind the liver to do its job. It just did it. All night. Every night. Keeping the blood clean. Keeping the system running. Keeping you alive without asking for recognition.

The kidneys balanced the water. Two small filters working in shifts. Pulling waste from the blood. Adjusting the salt. Regulating the pressure. Sending what the body does not need down and out. And they did this while you slept. While you were not paying attention. While you were not monitoring anything. The kidneys were monitoring everything. Keeping the balance exact. Keeping the system stable. Keeping you from drowning or drying out.

The stomach broke down the food from last night. The intestines pulled the nutrients out. The pancreas sent the enzymes. The gallbladder sent the bile. The whole digestive system working in sequence. Grinding. Dissolving. Absorbing. Eliminating. And you did not oversee this process. You did not check if it was happening correctly. You just ate the food and the body did the rest. Turned the food into fuel. Turned the fuel into movement. Turned the movement into this morning.

The bones held their shape. Two hundred and six pieces of living rock that are rebuilding themselves even now. Cells breaking down old bone. Cells laying down new bone. The skeleton staying strong not because it is permanent but because it is constantly renewing. And you did not know this was happening. You did not feel it. But it was happening. The bones were maintaining themselves. The structure was holding. The frame was solid.

The blood moved. Five litres of it. Carrying oxygen to every cell. Carrying glucose to every tissue. Carrying hormones to every organ. Picking up waste. Dropping off supplies. Making the circuit. Heart to lungs to body to heart. Over and over. Sixty thousand miles of vessels. And the blood knew where to go. The pressure knew how to adjust. The flow knew how to distribute. You did not direct any of it. You just lived inside a system that was already directing itself.

The voice was ready when you needed it. The vocal cords tensed. The air moved through. The sound came out. And you spoke. You said good morning to your father. You answered your daughter’s question. You called your son’s name. And the voice worked. It shaped the words. It carried the meaning. It made the air into language. And you did not think about how. You just spoke and the speaking happened.

The hands held the cup. Twenty-seven bones in each hand. Thirty-four muscles. Thousands of nerve endings telling you the temperature, the texture, the weight. And the fingers curled around the cup without you calculating the grip. Without you measuring the pressure. The hands just knew. They have held ten thousand cups. They know what holding feels like. They did it automatically. They did it right.

The brain kept you conscious. Eighty-six billion neurons firing in patterns you will never understand. Keeping you awake. Keeping you aware. Keeping you able to read this sentence. To remember yesterday. To imagine tomorrow. To recognise your daughter’s face. To recall your father’s voice. To know that you are you. And you did not build this network. You did not program it. You just inherited it. And it works. Every morning. It brings you back. It makes you present. It gives you the day.

The body is not perfect. The back aches sometimes. The knee stiffens. The shoulder tightens. The sleep is not always deep. But the body is working. It woke up working. It is working now. The heart is beating. The lungs are filling. The blood is moving. The bones are holding. The muscles are firing. The nerves are signalling. The organs are processing. The systems are running.

And you did not earn this. You did not deserve it. You were just born into a body that knows how to keep itself alive. That has been keeping itself alive since before you had a name. That will keep itself alive today. That will carry you through the hours. That will hold you upright. That will move you forward. That will bring you home.

The machine is quiet. It does not announce itself. It does not ask for applause. It just works. And because it works, you get to do everything else. You get to think. You get to feel. You get to choose. You get to walk to the park. You get to write the code. You get to hold your son. You get to see your daughter. You get to sit with your father. You get to be here.

The body is the gift. Not the outcome. Not the achievement. Just the plain fact of being carried. Of being held. Of being kept alive by a system that does not need your permission to function. That worked all night. That is working now. That will work tomorrow.

You are awake inside a working machine. That is what this morning is.
