You wake and the word is there before thought arrives. Again. Not as answer or question. Just the fact of it. Again morning. Again breath. Again the body upright. Again this room. Again the gap between sleep and the day’s first ask.
Again is not repetition the way a stuck record repeats. It is recurrence. The way tide comes back. The way breath returns after breath. The way winter arrives every year and is never quite the same winter. Again is the structure underneath everything. The pulse. The rhythm that says: this ended and now it begins. You slept and now you wake. The day closed and the day opens. Again.
Your father has been climbing those stairs for thirty years. Every morning. Again the stairs. Again his hand on the rail. Again his body lifting itself one step at a time to the chair that waits for him. You have watched him do this thousands of times and it has never been automatic. Every morning his body has to agree to it again. Has to find the strength again. Has to make the small decision again that yes, today, one more time, I will climb. And he does. Again. And you are here to see it. Again.
Your daughter will come down those same stairs in an hour. She will come down the way children come down stairs — fast, careless, certain. She does not know yet that the stairs will not always be easy. That one day her body will have to negotiate with them the way your father’s body does. But today she is still the version of herself that takes stairs for granted. And you get to see that version again. You got to see it yesterday. You will see it tomorrow. Again and again until the day you do not. And so again matters. Again is the gift pretending to be ordinary.
The work you do is the same work you did yesterday. Again the systems. Again the code. Again the problem that needs solving. Again your hands on the keyboard. Again the screen lighting your face in the dark hours. It would be easy to call this repetition and feel the weight of it. To say: again this, again only this, again the same small territory. But again is not smallness. Again is the thing that compounds. The code you write again and again becomes the system. The morning you show up again and again becomes the practice. The choice you make again and again becomes who you are. Again is not the opposite of progress. It is how progress happens.
You will walk to the park again this morning. Again the path. Again the gate. Again the circuit. Again the ants rebuilding what yesterday’s rain washed away. Again the birds in the same trees. Again your legs carrying weight they have carried before. It is the same park. But you are not the same. The you who walks today is the you who walked yesterday plus one more day of living. Again does not mean unchanged. It means returned to. Picked up where you left it. Continued.
The sun will rise again in a few minutes. It rose yesterday. It will rise tomorrow. Again and again and again for five billion years. And in all those risings, this one is yours. You get to see this one. Again you are here when the light comes. Again you are awake to watch it arrive. Again the sky goes from black to blue without asking you to do anything. The sun does not need your help. It will rise again whether you watch or not. But you are watching. Again. And that watching is the whole practice.
Your wife is still sleeping. Again you are awake before her. Again you have these minutes that are only yours. Again the house holds both of you — one sleeping, one awake — and does not ask you to be the same. In a few hours you will speak to each other. Again the ordinary exchange. Again the small negotiations of a shared life. Again the choice to be soft when sharpness would be easier. You will not get it right every time. But you will get the chance again. That is what again gives you. Not perfection. Another turn.
The tea you are holding is the same tea you held yesterday. Again the heat in your palms. Again the bitterness on your tongue. Again the small ceremony of making it and drinking it and letting it do what tea does. You could have made coffee. You could have had nothing. But you made tea. Again. And the again is what makes it a ritual instead of a reflex. Again is how a thing becomes a practice. How an action becomes a container. How the ordinary becomes the thing that holds you.
Your son’s hands are learning to grip. Again he reaches. Again he closes his fingers around the thing he wants. Again he drops it. Again he reaches. He does not know he is practicing. He does not know that again is how the body learns everything it will ever know how to do. He just reaches. Again. And one day his hands will be able to hold what they cannot hold yet. Because again. Because the body that tries again is the body that learns.
The money will arrive again this month. Again the systems will execute. Again the work you did before will pay you now. Again you will not have to trade every hour for every dollar. Again the engine will run while you sleep. This is not luck. This is the result of building something that can happen again without you. Again is what you built for. The thing that runs again and again while you do something else. And it is running. Again.
The message will come again from the person who holds the mirror. Again the early hour. Again the question you could not ask yourself. Again the steadiness on the other end. Again the practice of being seen. You could do this alone. You have done it alone. But again you are choosing not to. Again you are letting someone else hold the space. Again you are trusting that being witnessed is part of the work. And it is working. Again.
The room in Delhi is being built again today. Again the hands that are not yours laying brick. Again the walls rising. Again the thing that was only an idea becoming the thing you can walk into. It is not finished. But again today it will be a little more finished than it was yesterday. Again the progress you cannot see from here but that is happening anyway. Again the trust that the work continues even when you are not watching it continue.
The grip will tighten again today. You know this. Again you will catch yourself holding too hard. Again you will feel the fear that if you loosen you will lose. Again the old pattern. But again you will see it. And again you will have the choice. You will not always choose loosening. But again you will have the option. Again is what gives you the chance to choose differently. Not once. Not as transformation. Just again. Just the next time it comes up.
Your brother is not here to see this morning. Your sister is not here. They do not get again. They got the days they got and then the days stopped. And you are here. Again. Again you woke into a body that kept breathing while you slept. Again you get to see the people you love. Again you get to do the work. Again you get to try. Their absence makes your again mean something it would not mean otherwise. You are carrying something forward that they cannot carry. And you get to do it again today. That is not small.
The sun is up now. Again the light has arrived. Again the day is here. Again the world is asking you to show up. And you will. Again your feet will touch the floor. Again you will move through the rooms. Again you will speak and work and choose and rest. Again you will be the father and the husband and the builder. Again you will not do it perfectly. Again you will do it anyway.
Again is not the weight. Again is the gift. Again means you are still here. Again means the chance has come back. Again means you get another morning, another walk, another opportunity to show up as the person you are becoming. Again means it is not over. Again means the work continues. Again means you are alive.
Again.
